We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. maybe a little more subtle on the shadows though? especially the taskbar at the top. I'm thinking we don't want the taskbar to be very attention grabbing, unless the user is looking directly at it!

Thats not a taskbar. If your familiar with mac os, its a menu bar. The philosophy of this fake OS is that aesthetics should never hinder functionality and vice versa. The side bar in draft 3 is semi-transparent, but in my opinion, changing the transparency of the menu bar doesnt really serve much, because it just gets more distracting.
